Origins of the Name Santuari de Lluc
Tracing its roots back to a fascinating legend from the 13th century, the Santuari de Lluc is said to have been christened after a Moorish shepherd boy who embraced Christianity and adopted the name Lluc, reminiscent of the biblical Luke. Under venerable circumstances, Lluc unearthed a black effigy of the Madonna at the very spot where the sacred sanctuary stands today. Unveiling it to a local priest in the Escorca parish, the figure mystically disappeared only to reappear at the initial location. This could be a reference to the lush holm oak woods enveloping the serene confines of the sanctuary.
Origin of the Santuari de Lluc
The first chapel of the Santuari de Lluc was built in 1230. 30 years later, under King Jaume I, the extension to the hermitage Mare de Déu de Lluc ("Mother of God of Lluc"). The expansion to its current size took place in the 17th and 18th centuries.
As the flow of pilgrims to the monastery increased, the paths to the sanctuary were also paved. Thus, the old pilgrimage route "Cami Vell de Lluc" can still be walked from Pollença, Caimari and Sóller.
At the end of July/beginning of August also takes place the "Marxa des Güell a Lluc a peu", a 48km pilgrimage march from Palma to the Santuari de Lluc, in which every year about 50,000 people participate.
